1
The Creative
The creative principle is at its strongest. A time of originating, beginning, and sustained power. What arises from you now has the force to shape what follows for a long time. Align yourself with what is great and true; the moment supports genuine ambition.
2
The Receptive
The receptive principle is at its strongest. Great success comes through yielding, devotion, and quiet persistence. This is not a time to lead but to support: to carry, nourish, and hold what is given into your care. Strength here looks like softness.
3
Difficulty at the Beginning
A difficult beginning. The new thing is born into confusion, like a sprout pressing through frozen ground. Do not force an outcome; the situation is not yet ready to be understood. Expect turbulence: it is a sign of life, not of failure.
4
Youthful Folly
Youthful folly: inexperience meeting a situation it does not yet understand. This is not weakness; it is the beginning of wisdom. The teacher does not chase the student. Sincere questioning and genuine humility now are the seeds of true learning.
5
Waiting
Waiting. The time is not yet ripe. Forcing the moment will spoil what would otherwise arrive in due course. Nourish yourself, conserve your strength, and hold your faith. The situation is moving: it simply does not yet need your hand.
6
Conflict
Conflict is present. Two forces press against each other, each convinced of its own justice. Victory won by force here becomes tomorrow's defeat. The way through is not to overpower but to find where the misunderstanding lies and meet it honestly.
7
The Army
The army: organized force in the service of a just cause. Success depends on inner discipline and on a leader whose purpose is clear. Without order, strength scatters. Without a worthy aim, even well-organized strength ends in regret.
8
Holding Together
Holding together. A moment when uniting with the right people, or the right direction, brings good fortune. Those who come early share in the blessing; those who hesitate arrive to find the door closed. Real fellowship rests on sincerity, not on convenience.
9
Small Taming
Small taming: a moment of restraint by a gentle but real force. Large ambitions are held in check by small obstacles. Nothing catastrophic is happening; you are simply not yet free to move. Refine yourself in the space this pause creates.
10
Treading
Treading: walking carefully in a place where missteps are costly. You are in a delicate position. Grace, tact, and a steady inner calm carry you through where force or protest would turn a manageable situation into disaster.
11
Peace
Peace. The great and the small meet; heaven and earth are in communication. A time of flow, exchange, and mutual support. What has been separate now comes together. Use this moment well; periods of such harmony are rare and ask to be honored with generosity.
12
Standstill
Standstill. The great and the small no longer meet. Heaven and earth have turned away from each other, and communication has broken. Do not attempt to force connection with those whose values have diverged from your own. Withdraw, preserve your integrity, and wait for the turning.
13
Fellowship
Fellowship with others. Genuine community thrives when it is founded on openness and a shared aim larger than the group itself. Private alliances, secret motives, and the impulse to gather only with those already like you: none of these endure. Speak honestly, act transparently.
14
Great Possession
Great possession. Much has come into your hands: resources, clarity, influence, or inner wealth. Such abundance is not trouble-free; it draws attention, expectation, and envy. The measure of the moment is not what you hold, but how openly and wisely you steward it.
15
Modesty
Modesty. A true quality of the inner person, not a posture for others. What is greatest works from below; the mountain beneath the earth is deeper than the one above it. Modesty here is not self-deprecation: it is the quiet confidence of those who do not need recognition to know their worth.
16
Enthusiasm
Enthusiasm. A time of natural, contagious momentum, but only if it arises from something true. Enthusiasm grounded in genuine inspiration carries others along effortlessly. Enthusiasm generated for effect exhausts itself and everyone near it.
17
Following
Following. To be followed, one must first learn to follow. Adapt yourself to what the moment genuinely asks of you, rather than to what you wish it would ask. Influence here comes not from insistence but from responsiveness: from the ability to meet reality as it actually is.
18
Work on the Decayed
Work on what has been spoiled. Decay has set in quietly, often through long neglect. This is not a cause for despair; it is a call to begin the restoration. Face what has been avoided and begin the patient work of repair. The situation is not beyond saving.
19
Approach
Approach. Something good is drawing near. An opening is appearing; new light is entering the situation. Meet it with sincerity and care, not with grasping. What begins well, tended patiently, grows strong. What begins rushed or careless squanders its promise.
20
Contemplation
Contemplation. A time for deep observation rather than action. What you need to see is already present; the task is to quiet yourself enough to perceive it. The superior person uses this pause to align their inner life with what is true, and so becomes an example without needing to speak.
21
Biting Through
Biting through. An obstacle stands between you and what you rightly seek, and it will not simply dissolve. It must be addressed directly and cut through. Avoid the temptation to rationalize the obstruction away; clarity and firm action are what the moment requires.
22
Grace
Grace. Beauty, form, and clarity of presentation bring small success. But do not mistake the ornament for the substance. Grace supports what is essentially sound; it cannot rescue what is essentially unsound. Keep the inner reality true, and let the outer form honor it.
23
Splitting Apart
Splitting apart. Something is coming down. The structure that no longer serves is in its final days, and no amount of propping up will save it. Do not fight the collapse; it is the condition for what is coming next. Withdraw, preserve your strength, and let what is ending end cleanly.
24
Return
Return. A turning. The cycle reaches its low point and the light begins to come back. What had wandered returns of its own accord. Do not rush it or grasp at it; the movement is gentle, and forcing it breaks the fragile new sprout.
25
Innocence
Innocence: acting without calculation. The right response to the moment arises naturally when motive is clean. Scheming, posturing, or strategizing for advantage here brings misfortune; the situation rewards transparent, unforced action rooted in honest intention.
26
Great Taming
Great taming. Strong energies are gathered and held by a still, steady discipline. Power here is not discharged impulsively; it is stored, refined, and directed. The cultivation of character is daily and unglamorous, but this is how real greatness is built.
27
Nourishment
Nourishment. Attend to what you are taking in: food, company, thought, media, attention. You become what you feed upon; what enters you shapes what emerges from you. This is a time to be discerning about the substance of your daily intake, both outer and inner.
28
Great Preponderance
Great preponderance. The beam bends under too much weight. Something in your situation has grown beyond what its structure can sustainably hold. Continuing as-is guarantees breakage. Act now, with both urgency and care, to restore balance before the collapse.
29
The Abysmal
Danger. The abysmal, repeated. You are passing through a genuinely difficult stretch. The way out is not cleverness or force but consistency: the water's ability to flow through the darkest places without losing its nature. Hold to your truth, and keep moving.
30
The Clinging
The clinging. Fire burns by clinging to what sustains it; clarity depends on what you are devoted to. Attach yourself to what is true, lasting, and worthy, and your light will burn steadily and far. Attach yourself to what is merely bright or exciting, and the fire will soon consume itself.
31
Influence
Influence: a stirring of connection. Two come into relation, drawn by a mutual response. This is how real communication begins. Receive the stirring without grasping at it; be open without losing your own center. The attraction deepens into something lasting when sincerity, not manipulation, guides it.
32
Duration
Duration. What endures is not what is loudest or strongest at a given moment, but what is most consistently itself. The mountain that gives life to the valley does so because it stays where it is, day after day. Return each day to the same true direction, and the effect accumulates into something unshakable.
33
Retreat
Retreat. A strategic withdrawal, not a defeat. The inferior is rising in the outer situation; holding ground here costs more than it gains. Step back gracefully, preserve your strength, and choose the ground where your integrity is not compromised. Timing the withdrawal well is itself a mastery.
34
Great Power
Great power. Considerable strength is now available to you, but strength without restraint is exactly how powerful things destroy themselves. The art of this moment is to use only as much force as the situation actually requires, and no more. Restraint here is the real mark of power.
35
Progress
Progress. The sun rises and illuminates what has been obscure. Recognition, advancement, and forward movement are at hand. What has been prepared in hidden work now becomes visible. Step forward openly; this is not a moment for false modesty.
36
Darkening of the Light
Darkening of the light. The outer situation does not favor your truth. To express it openly now invites harm or misunderstanding. This is not a time to protest or to push your vision; it is a time to keep the inner light alive quietly, continue your real work, and trust the longer cycle.
37
The Family
The family: or any close-knit group. A circle thrives when each person holds their proper role with sincerity. This is not hierarchy for its own sake; it is the recognition that clarity of relationship makes love and work sustainable. Muddled roles breed resentment; clean ones set everyone free.
38
Opposition
Opposition. Two things that should complement each other are at odds. Differences that could be productive are hardening into estrangement. Forced agreement will not heal this; only small, patient acts of honest understanding bridge what argument cannot. Begin with yourself.
39
Obstruction
Obstruction. A real obstacle stands in your path, and it will not move for pushing. Do not waste yourself in direct assaults on it. Turn inward, examine what in yourself the obstruction is revealing, and seek the help of those who know a different way around.
40
Deliverance
Deliverance. The tension breaks, the storm passes, the air is washed clean. What has been held in suspense is released. Do not waste this fresh moment on old grievances or postmortems. Return promptly to ordinary life and ordinary work; build something new on the cleared ground.
41
Decrease
Decrease. Something is being asked to go: effort, possession, illusion, expectation. Release it willingly, and the loss becomes a making-room. Cling to it, and the loss happens anyway, bitterly. The voluntary decrease at one level becomes the quiet increase at another.
42
Increase
Increase. Favorable forces are with you, supporting forward movement. Use this moment to begin what requires sustained effort; projects planted now receive the wind at their backs. But do not mistake good fortune for personal virtue: the current can shift, and the humble benefit longest.
43
Breakthrough
Breakthrough. What has long been building comes to a head. The situation calls for open, truthful speech and resolute action, but without aggression. A breakthrough won through righteousness endures; one won through rage collapses into new conflict.
44
Coming to Meet
Coming to meet. A small influence is entering the situation quietly. Whether it is welcome depends entirely on what it is; not all that approaches softly is friendly. Notice what is drawing near, and discern early whether it strengthens or subtly weakens you. Early clarity is decisive here.
45
Gathering Together
Gathering together. People come into one place for a shared purpose. The moment calls for a genuine center: a clear aim, a trustworthy leader, a sincere cause. Without it, a crowd is just a crowd. With it, the gathering becomes something capable of real work.
46
Pushing Upward
Pushing upward. Steady, unforced growth. The effort does not strain because the pace is correct. Small, regular movements accumulate into something substantial. This is not a time for dramatic leaps; the tree does not hurry, and yet it reaches the sky.
47
Oppression
Oppression. Exhaustion. Resources and support feel cut off; you are drained at a level that ordinary rest does not touch. This is a test of inner faith rather than outer strategy. Speak less, strive less, and rely on a quiet source within that does not depend on outer circumstances.
48
The Well
The well. The well serves all who come to it, but only if it is kept. A neglected well fails in the hour of thirst. Tend your sources of nourishment: your health, your practices, your relationships, your learning. What nourishes you enables you to nourish others.
49
Revolution
Revolution: a necessary change, a molting. The old order no longer serves, and the time has come for transformation. But move only when the timing is genuinely ripe. Changes begun too early fail for lack of ground; those begun too late fail for lack of momentum. The art is in the timing.
50
The Cauldron
The cauldron. A vessel of transformation: what enters it is slowly, patiently transmuted into something more refined. The work required is as much inner as outer. Preparation, right heat, right timing: these are unglamorous virtues, but they are how real alchemy is done.
51
The Arousing
Shock. A sudden arousing: thunder that wakes everything within a hundred miles. Something unexpected breaks into the ordinary pattern. Do not flee into distraction; those who stand their ground with composure inherit the clarity that follows. The shock itself is a passing thing.
52
Keeping Still
Keeping still. A call to quiet the restless mind, to halt the endless outward motion. True stillness is not absence of life but the condition in which life reveals itself most clearly. Much of what looks like necessary action is actually distraction from what is hard to feel.
53
Development
Gradual development. Advance by stages, unforced, unhurried. What grows slowly grows deeply; the tree that takes root on the mountain withstands every storm because it did not rush its rooting. Do not be swayed by those urging faster progress.
54
The Marrying Maiden
The marrying maiden. Entering a position that is not entirely your own ground. Much depends on tact, humility, and the understanding of what your actual role is here. Forcing the situation into one you would prefer invites loss; accepting the real situation with grace invites quiet benefit.
55
Abundance
Abundance. A moment of fullness at its peak. Enjoy this richness without clinging to it; what has reached its apex is already beginning its natural descent. Do not lament the inevitable turning, and do not pretend you can freeze the moment. Use the height well while it lasts.
56
The Wanderer
The wanderer. You are moving through territory that is not your home. Travel lightly, treat others with respect, take nothing you cannot carry. Strangers are watching how you conduct yourself; your behavior here establishes who you are in a place where your reputation does not precede you.
57
The Gentle
The gentle, the penetrating. Wind finds its way into every corner without effort. Small, consistent influence accomplishes what force cannot. Be patient; be consistent; be unassuming. The cumulative effect is far larger than any single gesture.
58
The Joyous
Joy: genuine and shared. The kind of joy that arises naturally when people meet in openness and truth. Express it; multiply it by sharing it. But keep the joy true; joy manufactured for effect is the opposite of this hexagram's blessing.
59
Dispersion
Dispersion. Hard feelings, stuck positions, inner ice: all begin to soften and scatter. Let go of what dissolves; what you could not release by will is being released by natural process. Meet this gently; dispersion done well is a great clearing.
60
Limitation
Limitation. Freedom arises from the right constraints, not from their absence. Water held by its banks becomes a river; water without banks becomes a swamp. Choose your limits consciously, choosing the ones that protect your energy and integrity, and they will serve rather than confine you.
61
Inner Truth
Inner truth. When what is inside you and what you express outwardly are aligned, you move others without effort. No argument is required; sincerity communicates what words alone cannot. Work on the inner; the outer will mirror it.
62
Small Preponderance
Small preponderance. Attend to small matters. This is not a moment for grand gestures; modest care applied to ordinary things is what produces real progress. The big leaps, if attempted now, overshoot their ground. Keep the scale of action appropriate to the moment.
63
After Completion
After completion. The work has been accomplished; the goal has been reached. But do not relax your attention: entropy begins the moment completion is declared. The art now is the maintenance of what has been achieved, which is less dramatic than the achieving but just as essential.
64
Before Completion
Before completion. You are close to the goal but not yet arrived. The final steps are where many efforts fail: through fatigue, overconfidence, or carelessness. The same attention that carried you this far must carry you through the last passage. Do not slacken now.
