Hexagram 14

Great Possession

大有

Upper

Fire · 離

the clinging, clarity

Lower

Heaven · 乾

the creative, strong

Contemporary judgment

Great possession. Much has come into your hands: resources, clarity, influence, or inner wealth. Such abundance is not trouble-free; it draws attention, expectation, and envy. The measure of the moment is not what you hold, but how openly and wisely you steward it.

Image

Fire in the heaven. The sun at the zenith shines on all things. The superior person curbs evil and furthers good, responding to the will of heaven with devotion.

Counsel

Be generous without losing your center. Do not apologize for what you have, but do not cling either. Use this moment to support others and to build enduring things. Arrogance now would turn fortune into its opposite; humility keeps the door open for what is still coming.

The six lines

Numbered from the bottom upward; displayed here from first to sixth.

  1. Line 1

A nine at the beginning means: No relation to what is harmful: this is no blame. If one remains mindful of the difficulty, one remains without blame.

  2. Line 2

A nine in the second place means: A great wagon for loading. One may undertake something. No blame.

  3. Line 3

A nine in the third place means: A prince offers it to the Son of Heaven. A petty person cannot do this.

  4. Line 4

A nine in the fourth place means: They make a distinction between themself and their neighbor. No blame.

  5. Line 5

A six in the fifth place means: Whose truth is accessible and yet worthy has good fortune.

  6. Line 6

A nine at the top means: From heaven he is blessed, good fortune! Nothing that is not furthering.
